Whether you are an experienced cyclist wanting to refresh your memory about the rules of the road or a teenager planning on biking to work regularly for the first time ever, you will want to practice smart biking skills to stay safe. Riding a bicycle regularly is a great way to keep your legs in shape and to burn major calories, and those are just some of the health benefits. Plus, it helps you do your part in keeping a clean, fume-free environment in your neighborhood. Before you head out for the first time, be sure you know and follow these smart biking tips.

First, always wear a helmet. There are many different types of bicycle injuries you could sustain; one of these is brain injury. The helmet is designed to protect against brain injuries, and wearing a well-fitting helmet designed for your age and size can save your life. If you are biking with less experienced children, you may also want to outfit them with knee or elbow pads.

Second, know and use hand signals. While they may feel unnatural to use initially, they help drivers next to you on the road know where you plan to turn and when you plan to stop. To turn left, hold your left arm out parallel to the road. To turn right, hold your left arm up next to your head. To stop, hold your left arm down by your side.

Third, ride your bicycle as if it were a car. Always ride on the right side of the road to flow with traffic, and follow all posted traffic laws. Be sure you are aware of vehicles around you, and be careful of weaving around cars.

There are plenty of simple ways that you can avoid bicycle injuries and stay happy and healthy on two wheels throughout the summer. With the wind running through your hair and the sun on your face, riding a bicycle becomes an amazing way to enjoy the gorgeous, warm weather and to get some fresh air as well. Plus, you can be an inspiration for others who may be considering biking to the store or to work to save gas, help the environment and become more physically active.
